If the current in two parallel current carrying wires is in same direction, the wire will experience an attractive force and if the currents are in opposite directions, the wire will experience a repulsive force. So, like current carrying wires attract each other.
Since the windings carry currents in the same direction, the lower end of the helix is pulled out of the mercury by an attractive force between the windings. As a result, the circuit shorts out, the current drops to zero, and the force of attraction disappears. Helix thus returns to its original location and once again completes the circuit. The helix then performs oscillatory motion while the process is repeated time and again.
