Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are used for emergency contraception also. When inserted into uterus within 72 hours after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, they are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Copper released from IUDs is toxic to sperm and can prevent them from reaching and fertilising ovum. Hormonal IUDs release progestin which thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach and fertilise ovum. It also causes thinning of the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to a fertilised egg.
