Detailed Solution

Assertion (A) is true. Collenchyma is a type of simple permanent tissue in plants that provides mechanical support to growing organs, such as stems and petioles. Collenchyma cells are elongated and have unevenly thickened primary cell walls that provide support to the plant without restricting growth. Unlike sclerenchyma, which is a dead tissue at maturity, collenchyma is a living tissue that can undergo some degree of elongation and differentiation.

Reason (R) is also true. Sclerenchyma cells have thick, lignified cell walls which provide mechanical support and rigidity to plant organs. The lignified cell walls of sclerenchyma cells make them strong and durable, allowing them to provide long-lasting structural support to plant organs such as stems and branches.

Hence, Both A and R are correct, but R does not explain A.
