Gene I of human beings determines the type of sugar that has to be associated with the oligosaccharide H substance of glycolipid of plasma membrane of RBC. It has three alleles I^A, I^B and i. I^A attaches N-acetyl galactosamine to the H substance and I^B attaches galactose, and allele ‘i’ does not attach any sugar to the H substance. H substance formation is under the control of gene H. H substance is trisaccharide and has galactose, N-acetyl glucosamine and fucose. Alleles I^A and I^B form two different forms of glycosyl transferases.
