Assertion (A): The layer of cells which covers the cerebral hemisphere is called gray matter.

Reason (R): The cytons of neurons are concentrated in that layer.

The gray matter of the nervous system, composed of neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, unmyelinated axons, axon terminals, and neuroglia, appears gray in color due to the presence of Nissl bodies within neuronal cell bodies and the absence of myelin. Nissl bodies, containing rough endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes for protein synthesis, give the cytoplasm of neurons a granular appearance contributing to the gray hue. In contrast to the white matter's white coloration, the gray matter lacks substantial myelination in its axons, distinguishing its grayish appearance.
