Q.

Given below are two statements. One is labelled Assertion (A) and the other is labelled Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Unlike spermatogenesis, meiosis does not produce four gametes during oogenesis.

Reason (R): Polar bodies formed during oogenesis do not transform into gametes.

Detailed Solution

In spermatogenesis, meiosis produces four functional sperm cells (spermatids) from each primary spermatocyte. However, in oogenesis, meiosis produces only one functional ovum (egg) and three polar bodies. The polar bodies are smaller cells that contain minimal cytoplasm and eventually degenerate. Thus, meiosis in oogenesis results in one mature gamete (ovum) and not four gametes as in spermatogenesis.

Polar bodies are formed during oogenesis as a result of meiosis I and meiosis II divisions that do not divide equally, resulting in one large ovum and three smaller polar bodies. Polar bodies degenerate during meiosis. They are not capable of further division or transformation into gametes, but their formation is part of the process of oogenesis.
