Given below are two statements: 

Statement I: Besides endocrine glands, hormones are also secreted by some tissues which are not endocrine glands. 

Statement II: Several non-endocrine tissues secrete hormones called growth factors. 

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

Statement I is correct. Besides traditional endocrine glands, various tissues, including certain organs and cells, can secrete hormones. For example, the heart secretes atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and the kidneys produce erythropoietin. These are examples of hormones originating from non-endocrine tissues.
Statement II is also correct. Several non-endocrine tissues secrete hormones called growth factors. These growth factors play important roles in tissue development, growth, and repair. Growth factors are mitogenic substances – they cause growth by stimulating cell division. Many growth factors act locally, as autocrines or paracrines. Examples include epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, etc.
