Given below are two statements.

Statement I : Carbon skeleton produced during respiration is used as precursors for biosynthesis of other molecules in the cell.

Statement II : Breaking of the C-C bonds of complex compounds through oxidation within the cells leading to release of a considerable amount of energy is called respiration.

In light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below. 

Statement I is correct. During cellular respiration, glucose and other organic molecules are broken down to produce energy in the form of ATP. As a result of this breakdown, carbon skeletons (carbon-containing molecules) are released. These carbon skeletons can be utilized as precursors for the biosynthesis of other molecules in the cell. Some of these molecules include amino acids, fatty acids, and other organic compounds that are essential for cell growth, maintenance, and functioning.

Statement II is also correct. Cellular respiration does involve the oxidation of carbon-containing molecules (such as glucose) and the release of energy.
