The base pairing confers a unique property to the polynucleotide chains. They are said to be complementary to each other, and therefore, if the sequence of bases in one strand is known, then the sequence in the other strand can be predicted. 

This enables a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material during replication and the process of copying genetic information from one strand of the DNA into RNA is termed as transcription. The principle of complementarity governs the process of transcription.
