Q.
Given below are two statements.
Statement I: Lipids found in cell membranes and other membranes are small molecular weight compounds as their molecular weight does not exceed 800 Da.
Statement II: During acid hydrolysis of living tissue, the broken membrane pieces form vesicles which are insoluble in water. Thus, lipids appear under acid insoluble fractions along with biomacromolecules.
In light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Detailed Solution
Lipids found in cell membranes and other membranes are small molecular weight compounds as their molecular weight do not exceed 800 Da. So they technically come under biomicromolecules. Moreover, lipids are not polymers.
Biomacromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids are polymers and have a molecular weight greater than 1000 daltons.
During acid hydrolysis of living tissue, the acid insoluble pool (retentate) consists of heavier and larger biomacromolecules, and the acid soluble pool(filtrate) consists of lighter and smaller bio micro molecules like amino acid, sugars etc.
But lipids which is neither a polymer nor a macromolecule also appear in the acid insoluble pool because the broken membrane pieces form vesicles that are insoluble in water. Thus, lipids appear under acid insoluble fractions along with biomacromolecules.
