Mendel studied seven pairs of contrasting traits in pea plant and proposed the laws of inheritance. 

To represent these seven selected characters ,Mendel worked with 14 true-breeding pea plant varieties, as pairs which were similar except for one character with contrasting traits.

Seven characters examined by Mendel in his experiment  on pea plants were seed shape, seed colour, flower colour, pod shape, pod colour, flower position and stem height.
