The renal medulla is the innermost part of the kidney, and it consists of conical structures called renal pyramids. The apex of each renal pyramid, known as the renal papilla, points towards the center of the kidney.

The renal cortex is the outer region of the kidney, and it extends between the renal pyramids as renal columns or columns of Bertini.
