The process of formation of megaspores from the megaspore mother cell is called megasporogenesis.

Only the functional megaspore develops into the female gametophyte (embryo sac). This method of embryo sac formation from a single megaspore is termed monosporic development. The typical embryosac has 7 celled,8 nucleated configuration. It consists of egg apparatus at the micropylar end, antipodals at the chalazal end and two polar nuclei in the central cell.
