Given below are two statements.

Statement I  : Undersecretion of GH in children results in stunted growth leading to pituitary dwarfism.

Statement II : Oversecretion of GH in adults results in abnormal growth leading to gigantism.

In light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect.

When there is insufficient secretion of GH during childhood, it can lead to a condition known as pituitary dwarfism or growth hormone deficiency. Pituitary dwarfism is characterised by short stature and delayed growth compared to peers. 

Gigantism is a condition that occurs when there is excessive secretion of GH during childhood and adolescence, before the closure of the growth plates in the long bones. However, once the growth plates close during puberty, the bones can no longer lengthen, and the condition progresses into acromegaly in adulthood. Acromegaly is characterised by the enlargement of bones and tissues, particularly in the face, hands, and feet, due to continued overproduction of GH by the pituitary gland.
