RBCs contain a very high concentration of the enzyme, carbonic anhydrase (minute quantities of the same is present in the plasma too). Carbonic anhydrase catalyses the reaction of CO₂ with H₂O to form H₂CO₃. It also catalyses the dissociation of H₂CO₃ into H⁺ and HCO₃^-.
