Traditionally, practically all homes in Rajasthan's semi-arid and dry regions, notably in Bikaner, Phalodi, and Barmer, had subterranean tanks called 'tankas' for storing drinking water. The tankas were constructed within the main house or the courtyard and part of the sophisticated rooftop rainwater gathering system.
