Glucose Oxidation by Nitric Acid

Glucose + conc HNO3 → A

When glucose is treated with concentrated nitric acid (HNO3), it undergoes oxidation at both the aldehyde group (C-1) and the primary alcohol group (C-6). Both these terminal groups are converted into carboxylic acid groups.

The resulting compound is called glucaric acid (also known as saccharic acid).

Chemical Reaction:

C6H12O6 + 2 HNO3 → C6H10O8 + By-products

Formula of ‘A’ (glucaric acid): C6H10O8
