Governor-General Warren Hastings persecuted James Augustus Hickey.
James Augustus Hickey took over as editor of the Bengal Gazette, a weekly publication, in 1780. English printing in India was started by a private English company proud of its independence from imperial influence. Hickey published numerous advertisements, some of which dealt with purchasing and selling "slaves". But he also spread gossip regarding the Company's top representatives in India. Governor-General Warren Hastings was incensed by this, so he persecuted Hickey and promoted the creation of official newspapers to offset the information flow damaging the colonial government's reputation.
