Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire from the 15th century till its independence in 1832. The catalyst for nationalist sentiment among Europe's educated elite was the Greek war of independence. Since the fifteenth century, Greece had been under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The rise of revolutionary nationalism in the European region prompted a struggle for Greek independence, which began in 1821. Other Greeks living outside of Greece and many West Europeans with an affinity for ancient Greek culture backed nationalists in Greece. Between 1821 to 1829, Greece successfully fought the Ottoman Empire in the Greek war of independence.
