The 73rd Constitutional Amendment brings local self-government to urban areas. It is also called municipal government. It comprises three types of local bodies according to the city's population. A municipality, or Nagar Palika, is set up for small towns. It is like a gram panchayat. A municipal council, or Nagar Parishad, is set up for the city. Whereas a municipal corporation is for large cities. All three urban local bodies are set up for five years. The members of the council are known as councillors. They represent their wards.
