Detailed Solution

Growers of woad in Europe saw indigo as a crop which would provide competition to their earnings.
In Europe, woad growers perceived indigo as a crop that would compete with their earnings.
Woad was a temperate plant that was used to produce cloth dye. It was used to produce violet and blue dye. The European dyers depended upon woad as it was cheap compared to indigo. However, with the fall in prices of indigo, the cloth dyers preferred indigo over woad. Indigo was also preferred as it produced a rich blue colour. The dye of the woad was pale and dull. The woad growers faced competition from the indigo imports. They protested against indigo imports and pressured the government to ban the imports of indigo. However, the ban was removed by the end of the 17th century on the demand of cloth producers.
