Most nomadic pastoralists and sheep herders in Jammu and Kashmir are Gujjar Bakarwals. They keep sheep and goats for milk and wool and sell them in the market. In quest of pastures for their cattle, the nomadic pastoralists of Jammu and Kashmir move from one location to another. The Gujjar Bakarwals migrate to the mountains in the summer and to the forests in the winter to spend the colder months in comfort. The dry grasses make for excellent pasture land for cattle.
