Gunda Dhur was the leader of the Dhurwas tribal group.
The well-known revolutionary who led the Bastar uprising in 1910 was Gunda Dhur. He was a member of the Dhurwas tribe. The Bastari people strongly bonded with the land on which they lived. They took excellent care of the forests and the resources available because they thought it would prosper. This intimate bond was jeopardised when the British conquerors intended to restrict two-thirds of the forested land. The tribals were forbidden from shifting agriculture and acquisition of diverse forest resources. Hence, many were displaced because they were only allowed to live in the reserved lands if they worked for free. Famines and the growing anger of the populace led to a revolt against the government.
