Detailed Solution

Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan were the rulers of  Mysore. Haidar Ali ruled over Mysore from the year 1761 to 1782. Tipu Sultan was Haidar Ali’s son and ruled over Mysore from the year 1782 to 1799. Tipu Sultan was also called the ‘Tiger of Mysore’. The southern state of Mysore had grown enormously under the rule of these able rulers. Mysore also controlled the trade on the Malabar coast. This coast was extremely important to the British East India Company because the Company purchased pepper and cardamom from this coast alone. However, Tipu Sultan directly challenged the British by stopping the export trade and establishing close ties with the French in India.
