Hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles found in the dermis or skin. While hair is growing beneath the epidermis, its outer covering is soft. Once it goes past the epidermis, the outside layer hardens into keratin. Inside the follicle, the hair is growing and is “connected” to blood vessels and nerves. Outside the skin, the hair is essentially dead.
