Detailed Solution

Haldia port was developed as a subsidiary port, in order to relieve growing pressure on the Kolkata. India has 200 recognised nonmajor (minor/intermediate) ports and a 7,516.6 km long coastline, including 12 major ports. 95 per cent of India's international trade is handled by these large ports. The most secure and deepest port is at Visakhapatnam, a landlocked region. This port was initially intended to serve as a port for the export of iron ore. Iron ore is mostly exported from the Odisha port of Paradip. An inland riverine port is Kolkata. This port feeds the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin's waste and wealthy hinterland. Because it is a tidal port, Hoogly must constantly be dug up. To ease mounting demand on the Kolkata port, Haldia Port was created as a Subsidiary Port.
