Detailed Solution

Hampi fell into ruin following the defeat of Vijayanagara in 1565 by the Deccan Sultans.
Hampi was a major commercial and cultural centre during its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries. Hampi's architecture was distinctive. The royal complex's buildings featured magnificent arches, domes, and pillared halls with niches for sculptures. They also had well-designed orchards and pleasure gardens with sculptural motifs like lotuses and corbels. Temples were the centre of cultural activity, and devadasis (temple dancers) performed in the many-pillared halls of the Virupaksha (a form of Shiva) temple before the deity, royalty, and masses. However, following the defeat of Vijayanagara in 1565 by the Deccani Sultans - the rulers of Golconda, Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, Berar, and Bidar - Hampi fell into ruin.
