Detailed Solution

Hampi fell into ruin following the defeat of Vijayanagara in 1565 by the Deccan Sultans. Hampi was a central commercial and cultural hub during its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Moors, a collective term for Muslim merchants, Chettis, and agents of European commerce such as the Portuguese, visited Hampi's markets. Temples were the epicentres of cultural activity. Temple dancers are known as devadasis performed in front of the deities, nobility, and masses at the Virupaksha, a form of Shiva, in the temple's many-pillared halls. The Mahanavami festival was one of the essential Hampi festivities. Following the destruction of Vijayanagara by the Deccani Sultans in 1565, Hampi fell into ruin.
