The Vijayanagara Empire, established in 1336, had its capital at Hampi, which is at the heart of the Krishna-Tungabhadra basin. Hampi's majestic remains provide evidence of a fortified city. These walls were built without the use of mortar or cement, and the method utilised was to push them together by interlocking. They also included leisure gardens with sculptural themes like the lotus and corbels, as well as orchards that were well organised.
