Handloom cloth production expanded in the Twentieth century.
The production of handicrafts developed in the 20th century. It was due to the reason that handlooms adopted certain technological changes to enhance production with no higher investments. One such device was the fly shuttle. Fly shuttle was used in the weaving process with the use of ropes and pulleys. By use of a fly shuttle, weavers could operate at the much larger loom and produce wide pieces of cloth. Many handlooms were fitted with the fly shuttle such as those in Travancore, Madras, Cochin, Mysore, and Bengal. It led to an increase in productivity and reduced labour demands. Thus, the technological changes in the handicraft sector made weavers compete with the mill sector.
