Harshvardhana belonged to the Vardhana dynasty. He was the son of Prabhakar Vardhana, who established the Vardhana dynasty and was also known as Harsha. In his writings, the Chinese Buddhist traveller Xuanzang lavishly praised the actions of King Harshavardhan. To overthrow the Gauda King Sasanka, Harsha formed an alliance with the king of Kamarupa,  Bhaskaravarman. After capturing control of Kannauj, Harshavardhan reunited the two kingdoms of Thanesar and Kannauj. He made Kannauj the capital of the kingdom.
