The Nazi ideology and Adolf Hitler's thoughts were heavily influenced by antisemitism. Hitler did not create the hate of Jews. Since the Middle Ages, Jews in Europe have experienced prejudice and persecution, frequently because of their religion. Christians viewed Jews' faith as an anomaly that needed to be eliminated. Jews were occasionally made to convert or prohibited from practising particular professions. Hitler's antisemitism is not known to have any specific cause. He explained in Mein Kampf that a protracted, internal battle led to his conversion to antisemitism. He was living and working as a painter in Vienna, where he is said to have developed a hatred for everything Jewish (1908-1913). According to most historians, Hitler developed this justification after the fact. He would have used it to reassure those who had yet to be won over by his viewpoint that they would ultimately come around.
