Otto Von Bismarck, Prussia's Chief Minister, was the main architect of the movement for the national unification of Prussia(Germany).
In 1848, some middle-class Germans tried to unite the different parts of Germany into a nation-state with an elected parliament, but the monarchy and the military suppressed this movement with the support of land owners of Prussia. Later, Prussia took the leadership of the movement for national unification under Otto Von Bismarck, its Chief Minister. Finally, after seven years of struggle, they won the war. In January 1871, Prussian King William I was proclaimed the German Emperor.
