Hector Pieterson was a young boy who lived in a black township called South Western Township (Soweto) in apartheid South Africa. He and his classmates were forced to learn Afrikaans in school. This was the language that the white people spoke in South Africa. However, Hector wanted to know his native language, called Zulu. In 1976, Hector was shot by the police during a protest. Such discriminatory practices were prevalent in the apartheid era. Several people, such as Nelson Mandela, fought this unjust system for many years. Finally, in 1994, the African National Congress led by Nelson Mandela succeeded in forming a democratic government. Thus, apartheid was abolished in South Africa.
