Hemichordates lack a notochord. Hence, they are now considered non-chordates. Earlier, they were considered a subphylum under phylum Chordata due to the presence of stomochord which is similar to notochord. But after understanding that stomochord is not homologous to the notochord, Hemichordata was separated from Chordata.
