The Constitution makers chose such a system for the nation to recognise the diversity the country has been accommodating since its independence. One way the nation recognised the variety of India was through its language policy. Though Hindi and English were identified as the official languages of India, this did not mean that other languages were ignored. Instead, Schedule VIII of the Indian Constitution recognises 22 languages, including Hindi, as the Scheduled Languages of India. Thus, the Constitution uses various measures to safeguard the multiple languages spoken in the country.
