Detailed Solution

Hindi is the mother tongue of 40% people of India. Although Hindi is India's official language, according to facts and figures, it is used by only 40% of the country's population. Based upon this fact, the constitution-makers were reluctant to make it a national language. Giving the Hindi language status as the national language of the country was not acceptable to many constituent assembly members because it could mean sidelining other languages. India is a country having vibrant cultures and multiple languages being spoken in its different parts. During the time of freedom, it was a significant concern for the political leaders to maintain and safeguard this diversity. Although Hindi is spoken by a majority of the masses, it still does not represent the whole of India.
