Detailed Solution

Historians have tried to divide history into ancient, mediaeval and modern periods. The periodisation of Indian history was initiated by a Scottish philosopher, James Mill. He published his book, A History of India, in three volumes. He categorised the periods of Indian history into three- Hindu, Muslim, and  British. However, Indian historians were not satisfied with this sort of classification. They presented another division- Ancient, Mediaeval, and Modern. The concept of the modern period was derived from western thought, characterised by the presence of ideals of equality, liberty, freedom, science etc. However, these features of the modern period were not available in British India. Therefore, many historians used the term colonial for the modern period.
