Steroid hormones are formed from cholesterol. They are fat-soluble hormones. The major three sex hormones are androgens, estrogens and progesterones. Both male and female consist of all three sex hormones but in different quantity.

Polypeptide hormones are small and are derived from precursors that have around 100 to 500 amino acids. Insulin and endorphins are the examples of polypeptide hormones.

Catecholamines consist of epinephrine and norepinephrine. They both are used as hormones as well as neurotransmitters.
