Detailed Solution

Based on affinity between dispersed phase and dispersion medium, colloidal solutions are classified in to two types.
They are
i) Lyophilic sols: The colloidal solutions in which the particles of dispersed phase have great
affinity for the dispersion medium are called lyophilic sols.
Ex:- Gums, Starch, Protein, Gelatin
• These are reversible colloids.
• These are generally stable solutions.
ii) Lyophobic sols: The colloidal solutions in which the particles of dispersed phase have no affinity for the dispersion medium are called lyophobic sols.
Ex: Gold sol, metal sols, sols of metal sulphides and oxides.
• These are irreversible colloids.
• These are less stable solutions.
