Detailed Solution

The distribution of seats for MBBS and BDS courses through NEET is primarily divided into two main quotas:

1. All India Quota (AIQ): 15% of Seats

  • What it is: This quota comprises 15% of the total MBBS and BDS seats in all government medical and dental colleges across India.
  • Who is it for: These seats are open to all eligible candidates from any state in India. There is no domicile (state residency) requirement to apply for AIQ seats.
  • Who conducts counseling: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), conducts the counseling for these 15% AIQ seats.
  • Includes: All AIIMS and JIPMER institutes (100% of their seats), as well as 100% of seats in Central Universities (like BHU, AMU, Delhi University colleges), ESIC, and Deemed Universities are also covered under MCC counseling, separate from the 15% AIQ contribution from state government colleges.
  • Competition: Generally, the competition for AIQ seats is very high because it attracts top-ranking students from all over the country aiming for prestigious institutions.

2. State Quota: 85% of Seats

  • What it is: This quota covers the remaining 85% of the MBBS and BDS seats in all government medical and dental colleges within a particular state.
  • Who is it for: These seats are primarily reserved for candidates who hold domicile (permanent residency) in that specific state. Each state has its own unique domicile rules.
  • Who conducts counseling: The respective state counseling authorities (e.g., Directorate of Medical Education of that state) handle the counseling for these 85% state quota seats.
  • Includes: This also typically includes 100% of seats in private medical and dental colleges within that state, though some private colleges may also have "management quota" or "NRI quota" seats that might be open to non-domicile candidates or specific categories.
  • Competition: Competition for State Quota seats is generally less intense than AIQ, as it's restricted to students from within that state. However, the cut-offs can still be very high in states with many strong candidates or fewer medical colleges.
