Detailed Solution

  1. Ethanol is a liquid at room temperature with a pleasant odour while ethanoic acid has a vinegar-like smell.
  2. The melting point of ethanol is 156oK, while the melting point of ethanoic acid is 17°C and hence it often freezes during winter in cold climates.
  3. Ethanoic acid reacts with metal carbonates and metal hydrogen carbonates to form a salt, water, and carbon dioxide gas while ethanol does not react with metallic carbonates.
