Detailed Solution

Plasmolysis can be reversed by placing the affected plant cells in a hypotonic solution, where the surrounding medium has a lower solute concentration than the cell’s cytoplasm. Water moves back into the cell by osmosis, refilling the central vacuole and pushing the plasma membrane against the cell wall. This restoration of pressure is called deplasmolysis.

The cell regains turgidity, its shape returns to normal, and metabolic processes resume. In practical terms, watering a wilted plant reverses plasmolysis by rehydrating its cells. However, if dehydration is prolonged, the plasma membrane may be damaged and deplasmolysis becomes impossible. In controlled lab experiments with onion epidermal cells, switching from salt solution to distilled water demonstrates this recovery process clearly. Thus, osmotic balance and adequate water supply are essential for maintaining plant structure and life functions.
