The indentured labourers got lured into foreign lands with the promise of a better life and salary. They worked in plantations in the Caribbean islands like Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam, Fiji and Mauritius. However, the reality of the plantation workers turned out to be the complete opposite of what they got promised. Despite the harsh conditions, the labourers found their ways of adapting to that life. They hailed from various cultures and combined them to form new festivals and forms of entertainment. The riotous carnival called Hosay was an example of this.
