How did Satyendra Nath Bose view the role of teaching?

Satyendra Nath Bose considered teaching as a sacred responsibility and a lifelong mission. Throughout his career, especially at the University of Calcutta and the University of Dhaka, he emphasized that the purpose of education was not memorization but understanding and curiosity.

He believed that teachers should awaken scientific thinking rather than simply deliver lectures. Bose encouraged students to question theories, perform experiments, and explore mathematics and physics deeply. Even after gaining international fame for his collaboration with Einstein, he chose to remain in India, dedicating his life to developing scientific education.

Bose also promoted teaching in Indian languages, believing that complex scientific ideas could and should be expressed in native tongues for wider understanding. His classrooms were known for open discussion, simplicity, and inspiration rather than rigid formality.

In his view, a true teacher was not one who demanded respect but one who earned it through clarity, humility, and passion for knowledge. For Bose, teaching was as valuable as research — both essential for nurturing future scientists and advancing society.
