Detailed Solution

Indian industrialists and merchants made great wealth and grew in popularity during the First World War. They wanted protection from imports of goods and a rupee-to-sterling exchange rate that would discourage imports. The businessmen opposed colonial control of the Indian economy and initially backed the Civil Disobedience Movement. They provided financial support but would not purchase imported products. On the other hand, in the Nagpur region, the industrial working classes did not participate in the Civil Disobedience Movement in significant numbers.
