The early Indian business people prospered and became wealthy as commerce with China increased. The British in India started distributing opium to China in the late eighteenth century and brought tea from China to England. Many of the Indian traders who took part in this market and helped finance it, buy supplies, and build other infrastructure facilities prospered. They became wealthy and were able to start huge businesses as a result of participating in these activities. In addition, other trading networks, such as those with Burma, the Middle East, and East Africa, allowed for the accumulation of capital and wealth.
