The idea of Satyagraha work in the early stages of the struggle in India as it was first used in South Africa and was successful. Organised the Satyagraha for the Champaran and Kheda and the Satyagraha for the Cotton mill workers. Mahatma Gandhi first used the method of Satyagraha in South Africa against the race's regime being met out to the Indians by the Europeans residing in South Africa. This was the first successful noble method of mass education, which he called Satyagrah. After he returned to India from South Africa after 21 years, he immediately started experimenting with the Satyagraha Movement in India. In 1916, he encouraged the Champaran peasants to protest and struggle against the colonial government, using repressive measures on the peasants to forcefully grow the crop indigo without being paid for their labour. In 1917, he organised Satyagrah to support the peasants of the Kheda district of Gujarat as they were hit by crop failure and a plague epidemic and had to pay high revenues because the government was not ready to reduce the revenue rates. In 1918, he organised a Satyagrah for the cotton mill workers who came to Ahmedabad and presented their demand for an increased wage rate to the mill owners. This is how the idea of Satyagraha worked in the early stages of the struggle in India.
