The seizing of power by the colonials spelt doom for the pastoralists. Grazing lands shrank because the colonists wanted to convert grazing grounds into cultivated lands. The British got two benefits from this decision-one source of land tax increased, and two crops required by the British, like cotton, could be produced.
Furthermore, forests were categorised, and the British prohibited pastoralists' entry into specific categories. The colonial government restricted their mobility because they disapproved of frequent residence changes. They had to live in villages notified by the colonial authorities. Their movements in the forests were also regulated.
