How did the motto become associated with the French Revolution?

The phrase “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” emerged among revolutionary societies and was widely used by radical factions, including Maximilien Robespierre, in speeches from 1790 onward. It tied together the values of the Enlightenment with the republican revolutionary movement. Though it was not the only slogan at the time, by the 1848 revolution and under the Third Republic the motto gained institutional backing and became symbolic of the French Republic.
